Beginning to Read the Common Core way

Can Johnny Learn to Read with Common Core?

Learning about Print

Do you remember when you first began to read?  Most of us do not.  I for one do not recall when I first read a page or words.  i do remember reading the "Run Spot Run" or Dick and Jane books.  Yes, I am revealing my age here.

Learning about print is a right of passage for some that is passed through without fanfare or feelings of accomplishment.  For others, dealing with print is traumatic and can  produce problems most of their lives.  Most of us fall between these two extremes.  But now our public school students are saddled with a one size fits all Common Core State Standards.

As a retired Reading Teacher I was instantly aware that emergent readers,  those entering kindergarten, were excited and wanted to learn about print.  That is why they have been sent to school.  Some of the little ones were lonely for their Moms and even might cry to go home.  But cradle a little one in your lap, with a great story, and they will be hooked.

Our world

I attended a concert at a local church last night and enjoyed gospel blue grass like I have never heard before. I was not excited about going but we don't get to see anything live too much so I try to attend when it is in person entertainment. It was the King Family and they were wonderful. I was thinking of our world while they were playing ; they had music from the past and we could pretend all the stupid stuff that has invaded our lives do not exist for a while. The stupid stuff I refer to is: national debt, tax codes politicians, money, computer stuff all of it, and on and on and on. What will our world look like 5 or 10 years from now? Lord knows; we willl stay close to him.
I am reading a Will Cather book called Song of a Lark- very wonderful book.
this is all for now. I only moved one lillie today and have 6 more to go!!!

Harry Reid; just amazing

I woke up and did my usual coffee and wake up with Fox News and then did my devotional; very interesting about David. Anyway, and then Fox News informs that good old Harry Reid thinks that the Tea Party Movement is DEAD. It is truly amazing that Nevada actually voted this poor soul back into office. He is so very out of touch it is to scary! I pray everyday for our leaders and especially for Harry Reid; I really don't expect God to open his eyes about the Tea Party Movement and think that it is probaby a waste of God's time to open his eyes. I pray that God will use him to help this natioy though perhaps in a new way. I don't pretend to know the mind of God; I certainly don't but I do pray that God will protect this nation from evil. That means to me that Harry Reid should just stay so out of touch. The tea Party Movement is not dead; it is only just begun. I am praying for revival in this country. We need to let God know that we as a God fearing Country ask for forgiveness and ask that he deliver us from this evil forces in the white house. National Day of Prayer will be coming up and I plan on helping with organizing for that. God is the only one that can help us.

Hi Brian,

I enjoy your pics so much. I would love it if you have a pic of you being a penquin. We are praying for you; it must be very difficult to be with all those children and seeing their need. Mom S.

Brian and Mission trip

Hi Brian,
I prayed for all of you and enjoyed seeing the pics. I am so thankful that the Doc. said ok on going and be sure and drink a lot of water. We are busy here trying to stay ahead of weeds, it is supposed to be a heat index of 105 today. I wonder what it will be like in Africa. Mom Staggs
